Group assignment in metastats

Hi very simple question - how do you identify which is group1 vs group 2 in mothur’s metastats output? I couldn’t find this in the documentation/forum and while I would guess that it is based on the order of the design file with the first set to appear corresponding to group 1 I would like to verify.

I’ve tried to do this on my own by calculating the mean relative abundances from the .tax.summary for both groups and comparing this but I don’t get consistent results - I would guess this is because mothur subsamples to obtain the same number of reads for each group rather than just using relative values like I did.

If you look at the file name, the first group name in the file name is group 1 and the second is group2.
