Which label or taxlevel means genus level in mothur?

Hi there,

I am following the MiSeq SOP for mothur and getting confused about how to get the Genus-level information.

  1. In the section Phylotypes, the paragraph states “1 through 6 listed; these correspond to Genus through Kingdom”, which means that label=1 shows Genus level.

  2. From the file *.tax.summary outputted from classify.otu, it seems that taxlevel = 6 indicates Genus level? (0 -> Root and 1 -> Bacteria)

If my understanding is correct, why here is using different numbers (1 and 6) to indicate the Genus level?

Sorry, that’s just the way it is. Clearly there should be far more genera than phyla, regardless of the number you pick.
