I’ve been trying out the subsample parameter for generating unifrac distances, and I’ve found that it frequently crashes after writing the first line of the uwsummary/wsummary file. mothur crashes with a generic malloc() error but it doesn’t seem to be due to the computer running out of RAM. I’ve taken screenshots of the system monitor as it happens, and there’s no spike it usage prior to the crash (also, my tree only has about 600 sequences in it and the computer has 24 GB of RAM).
Has anyone else had this error, or know what causes it? In general, it seems to succeed every 1 in 5 tries but the rest of the times crashes.
