chimera.uchime: alignment necessary?

Hello,

Is alignment of nucleotide sequences necessary before chimera.uchime?
I work on amino acid alignments and use a web-based aligner which cannot back-translate aligned amino acids into correct nucleotides. I still would like to check my seqs for chimeras.

The chimera.uchime command does not require sequences to be aligned.
